Question: What is spinal decompression therapy?
Answer: Spinal decompression therapy is a clinically tested, computerized, and FDA cleared traction-based treatment that is highly effective (approximately 85% have significant improvement, but most have permanent improvement) and painless. The decompression therapy allows increased blood flow, prevents muscles spasms, and enables an insufficient disc to return to the correct position to heal and remove pressure form the nerves. Additionally, spinal decompression therapy creates a vacuum effect to alleviate pressure on discs while traction simply stretches muscles only. Top
Question: What conditions does spinal decompression treat effectively?
Answer: The most common conditions spinal decompression treats are: low back, buttock, hip or leg pain (sciatica) with or without associated tingling or numbness in the leg or foot; also, neck, shoulder or arm pain with or without associated tingling or numbness in the arm or hand. These conditions are usually due to bulging, herniated or degenerated discs, facet syndrome, or failed back or neck surgery. Top
Question: What is the treatment plan and cost of spinal decompression therapy?
Answer: Spinal decompression therapy treatment plans generally include 20 treatments for 25-30 minutes each session. A patient's cost will depend upon insurance coverage as well as the condition; however, the reward of feeling well again far outweighs the cost of spinal surgery or worse, the possible adverse effects of some spine surgery. Question: Should I consider spinal decompression before surgery? Can a patient who has already undergone surgery receive spinal decompression therapy?
Answer: Yes and yes. Patients should absolutely consider alternatives to surgery, especially when they are drug-free and do not have side effects. Spinal decompression therapy produces success in alleviating pain in patients who had spinal surgery and hip replacement as well as arthritis complaints. Top
Question: For what conditions is spinal decompression therapy not recommended?
Answer: Dr. St. Laurent does not recommend spinal decompression therapy for pregnant women or patients suffering from severe osteoporosis. Even without spinal decompression, these patients will receive restorative results through spinal manipulation and ultra sound. Top
Question: What should I expect on my first visit and early treatments?
Answer: The consultation and evaluation will likely last one hour as Dr. St. Laurent determines the root cause of your condition and reviews all medical documentation such as x-rays and MRIs. If you are a candidate for spinal decompression, Dr. St. Laurent will demonstrate the therapy as well as review treatment plan details. During treatments, patients remain fully clothed and will likely experience pain relief after the first visit. Some patients experience muscle soreness after 1-3 treatments, which is fully expected due to a lack of normal stimulus to the muscles. The majority of patients have noted feeling better by week 2 followed by a positive progression of increased health and decreased pain. Top
